Airdate: April 25, 1999

From Tiny Dancer's Site:

If you've read the filming report, here's a little tidbit and a spoiler, watch your step! In the scene where Mulder and Scully are batting together, I'm told that when the ball is hit the camera will follow it into the air and it turns into a shooting star or something equally spectacular.

4.9.99:

From  SpoilerVille:

From TomBli in the Cinescape Insider:
[DD's episode] is a standalone episode told from the viewpoint of Arthur Dales (Darren McGavin). The story concerns a superstar Negro League baseball player (Jesse L. Martin), who resists being promoted to the majors because of a secret he has to hide. Although no historical Negro League teams or players will be referenced in the episode, X-Philes might recognize some of the names on the jersey-backs of the peripheral players (think crew members). Brian Thompson's alien bounty hunter also appears in the story, which is set in the desert of Roswell, New Mexico for a little X-flavor.

What's this about Mulder, Scully, and... ice cold dairy products??

4.9.99:

From what I hear, the ice cream scene takes place at the beginning of this ep, and it involves some nice interplay and subtext about ice cream.  I also hear that this is one of the few scenes that Gillian is featured in this ep.

4.2.99:

From Paula on the message boards at  SpoilerVille :
A little birdie told me something about the DD ep... Something about Mulder eating ice cream.  Another source tells me maybe it wasn't his ice cream to begin with. My instincts tell me that Scully doesn't let folks get away with the theft of dairy products. Which would explain the other spoiler I heard.  Something about a sticky mess in the basement office.... ---hoping like heck that doesn't get cut for time or something.

Lots of yummy stuff:
From Cinescape Insider via Stephie J on SpoilerVille:
Regular Insider readers and X-Philes know that David Duchovny is set to write and direct an upcoming episode of the acclaimed sci-fi series. Thanks to a lead from regular tipster 'TomBli', the Insider called up Fox to confirm some possible information regarding the Duchovny-helmed installment.  Set to air April 25th, "The Unnatural" is a stand episode alone told from the viewpoint of Arthur Dales (Darren McGavin). Brian Thompson's alien bounty hunter also appears in the story, which 'TomBli' says is set in the desert of Roswell, New Mexico for a little X-flavor. Additionally, 'TomBli' claims that "The Unnatural" is a tip of the hat to Robert Redford's classic baseball film The Natural, which told the story of phenom Roy Hobbes' daring comeback after being gunned down by a mysterious black-clad woman. However, Fox denies any connection with the movie. 'TomBli' also suggests that Duchovny had more preparation time than is usual for directors, but Fox claims that the opposite is actually true (though the actor was given an early break from previous filming to prepare 'The Unnatural', they say).

I first saw this on Gertie's Board, originally from Vallery via "Fee Heitland" on SpoilerVille:
Hi everyone:)  A friend of mine sent me an account of the scene of Mulder teaching Scully how to hit a baseball..here is some dialog...it may not all appear in the final episode-(some lines tend to be cut..) but here is what DD and GA filmed:) I loved it! Val...awaiting to see this episode...impatiently:)

S: So I get this message on my answering service from a Fox Mantle to come to the baseball field for a very early or very late birthday present, I don't see any finely wrapped gifts Mulder.

M: Ever hit a baseball Scully?

S: Mulder, I have more necessary things to do with my time than hit a horsehide with a stick.

M: Come on and try (?)  Lots of mumbling now like in Detour. His lips are right on her ears......

Kid starts pitching balls, first pitch hits Mulder in the ass (DD must have gotten hit 100 times here)

M: OUCH

S: Mulder, are you supposed to hit it with your ass? (this line was cut out in later takes but filmed at least 8 times)

KID: I get $20 an hour for this

M: $15

Kid tosses a pitch and M ducks

M: $18.50

Kid tosses a pitch at M's groin and M leaps up opening his legs to avoid it

M: OK $20

At one point M says something about wiggling your hips, government conspiracies, blue suede, and a few other mumbled
lines,

S: Shut up Mulder, I'm playing ball.

In that nice voice she used in detour at the campfire.

I have a friend that was on the soundstage before they filmed the nightfilming
          --structured similar to Travelers...flashbacks
--there is a scene in which Mulder is visiting Dales discussing with him how
he doesn't believe that Aliens were not only fans of baseball...but they WERE
          baseball--he's dressed casual (jeans and a t-shirt)
--very little Mulder in the ep
--the baseball park shippy scene is at the end of the ep
--HE delivers the first line and steps in the scene, over the shoulder,
          featuring Dales..
-- mulder in his skepticism, says something like, "ET steal home, ET stealhome"
-- first off, dave was in no way an atypical actor turned first timedirector..
-- by the way, there WAS tension on the set, it was VERRRRy quiet...
--David has been very nervous but according to a friend who has been in the
industry for a long time....he's doing great!
-- anyhoo, he finally gets the take he wants, and the usual call for this is
CUT, PRINT, MOVING ON...but Dave's gotta do his little happy dance and funny
voice..moooovin awwwaawhn.--filming on Wednesday in Simi Valley

--More stuff on the DD ep. ...

Info from queequeg regarding the baseball scene between Mulder and Scully.
scene is shippy...David is playing it true to XF form...he is very relaxed doing this ep. Téa was
on the set It's shooting from the 19th to the 30th....Monday they will be in Ontario, California.

          --From Spoilerville:

Scully is indeed in the DD episode and Mulder gives her a lesson in playing ball.

DD's ep is now titled "Shades of Grey" not "Black Sun"...as of last night

--From Markus Nolden on XF Spoilers:

          6X20 Black Sun

Set in Roswell, New Mexico, and concerns the Negro leagues and an alien who
          falls in love with baseball.

--From Cinescape Online, regarding DD's ep. (6x20):

David Duchovny will step behind the camera later this week to direct an episode of the hit sci-fi
television series that has made him famous. Columnists Marylin Beck and Stacey Jenel Smith
report that the episode, set in 1947, will involve Negro League Baseball and that familiar town
of Roswell, New Mexico. Additionally, Kolchak: The Night Stalker himself, Darren McGavin,
will return in his third appearance as Agent Arthur Dales for the episode.

From EW article (2/5) Originally from  SpoilerVille :

DD has written and, for the first time, will direct an XF episode (airing in April). "It's about the
Negro leagues, and an alien who falls in love with baseball. I really love the script, I have to
say," he says, somewhat sheepish in his pride. "I remember finishing it and going, I wish I had a
better director, because I think it could be one of the best episodes we ever did."

          From AV on  SpoilerVille :

6X20 DD B-Ball Episode: Written by David Duchovny... will have little Mulder since he is
going to be doing props, casting and directing! It will have something to do about baseball.
